Congratulations to all the hard-working Labour activists and councillors across St Helens who have worked so hard for the town and achieved a fantastic result on May 1st.
The hard work and effort you put in to the community was reflected in an increase of two Labour councillors on St Helens Council. Congratulations to Cllr Richard Ward and Cllr Robbie Ayres who were both elected in Billinge and Seneley Green (St Helens North) and West Park (St Helens South) respectively.
It was a tough night for the party nationally and the government has responded by listening and learning from the mood of the public. A key part of responding to people’s fears and uncertainties about the current economic situation is to help those who have been affected by the abolition of the 10 pence tax rate.
In St Helens people will also want to know what the government’s response is. The Chancellor will shortly announce details of how we propose to compensate those affected.
In the meantime Thursday’s result in St Helens shows that, on the ground, hard-working Labour councillors are delivering for hard-working families across the borough. Congratulations to all who have worked so hard in the town.

For me the May 2008 local elections looks a very poor result for all parties. From the figures published in the St Helens Star on 08 May simple mathematics show the turnout across St Helens to be only 33.7%. The highest Rainford was only 43.1% and Parr the lowest at 23%. Therefore rather than a "fantasic result" for Labour it would seem 66.3% could be bothered or thought the vote a waste of their time. I suggest all parties remember who they work for-us the people.

Paul - Thank you for your comments.
You are of course correct to say turnout was lower than all those who believe in Democracy would wish to see. The turnout was slightly higher this year than at the 2007 Local Elections.
Labour has and will continue to work hard to engage with communities across St Helens and will build on their Manifesto (Labour was the only political party to offer a Manifesto) which centred on people priorities for the Borough.
Of course more can be done and the Government is looking at how we can increase participation across the Country at Election times.
That is why we made postal voting easier and we trialled voting by the internet and phone.
I would be interested to hear from you if you have any suggestions as to how turnout can be improved.
