Free Swimming

Today Labour announced more details of its free swimming scheme in partnership with local government.

I am my colleagues in Government are keen to encourage as many local authorities as possible make swimming free for over-60s and under-16s in St. Helens and across the country.

To achieve this, Labour is making available £15 million per annum in 2009-10 and 2010-11 – but only if local authorities want to.

This is great opportunity for the people of St. Helens. Not only to help stay fit and healthy, but to help nurture the athletic talent we are all looking forward to seeing in next month’s Olympics – not least our own 39 competitors from the North West.

Would you like to see your local authority here in St. Helens offer free swimming for over 60s and under-16s?

What other measures or initiatives would you like to see in relation to swimming and other sports?
