New Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice in Northern Ireland

Today I announced that Michael Maguire will replace Kit Chivers as Chief Inspector, Criminal Justice Inspection Northern Ireland (CJINI) on 1 September 2008.

The post of Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice in Northern Ireland is a challenging and vital role. Kit Chivers has done an excellent job and I am delighted now to appoint Michael Maguire to continue this work.

As I mentioned in my previous post, as we ride the wave of devolution and move closer to it by reforms of the criminal justice system, it is crucial that we maintain public confidence.

A strong, independent Chief Inspector of Criminal Justice in Northern Ireland is essential and I believe that Michael Maguire’s skills and judgement will be well suited for the task.
