Today I attended the Operation Banner service at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
The commemorative service took place to honour UK Forces who served during the 38-year deployment in Northern Ireland. Known as ‘Operation Banner’, more than 300,000 personnel served during the longest campaign in British military history, from 19690-2007.
Today was a unique opportunity to pay tribute to all the men and women who served during the Operation, as well as those who lost their lives during the campaign.
We will always be in the debt of those whose courage, bravery and dedication were hallmarks of their service in Northern Ireland.
Their selflessness, courage and supreme professionalism have played a vital role in laying the foundations for greater peace and prosperity in Northern Ireland.
These exemplary men and women are an inspiration to us all and we will always remember those who gave their lives to protect the people of Northern Ireland.
Today especially we honour their memory.
