Reduction of MRSA

I am delighted to report to you on the latest figures on MRSA bloodstream infections, published by the Health Protection Agency today.

These figures show that the number of MRSA infections in St. Helens and across England has fallen by 57% compared to the base level in 2003/4 when the target was set.

This has been achieved by a package of measures including an increase in matrons, pre-screening and hospital deep cleans.

The Government will now work with the NHS to sustain this reduction in MRSA infections, as well as delivering a 30% reduction in C. difficile in the next three years.

The Department of Health is investing £270 million per year by 2010/11 in improving infection prevention and control – including stringent hand-washing guidance for the NHS, clear guidance on appropriate antibiotic prescribing and the clinical care of patients with healthcare associated infections

The Government has achieved its target of halving MRSA blood stream infections in our hospitals.

We have come a long way in tackling infections – but one avoidable infection is one too many and we will go further.

Tackling healthcare associated infections is a challenge for health services all around the world – and it remains a top priority for the NHS here in St. Helens and throughout the country.
