The spectacular new St Helens Hospital has now opened its door to the public and started to treat its first patients today.
The Health Secretary, Alan Johnson MP, has also announced that the new St helens Hospital is the 100th hospital to be built under the hospitals building programme.
The scheme, launched by the NHS Plan in 2000, set a target of opening 100 new hospital schemes by 2010 to replace aging and unsuitable infrastructure through a mixture of PFI and public capital funded schemes.
That target has been met two years early.
As I have said before the new hospital is truly impressive and I think everybody who lives and works in St Helens will see the incredible work that has gone into this when they come here. It really is mind blowing.
Our Hospital will lead Europe in the use of technology with the most up-to-date, world class facilities which will put patients at the centre of everything at St Helens Hospital.
This Hospital is one of the finest examples of a Government trying to give people the best. I feel a huge source of pride as an MP and a member of the Cabinet that is making this happen.
I want you to marvel at it, get used to it really quickly and take it for granted. It is what you deserve.
I really think that this is fantastic news for everyone in St. Helens - and I’d love to hear what you think, too.
