I was saddened to hear of the death of a true rugby league legend. Eric achieved so much in the game and to this day is still regarded as one of the best centre forwards Rugby League has known.
As we all know Eric’s talent and grit drove the teams he captained to great victories including the fantastic Great British wins over Australia in the 1963 Ashes winning tour and when he lifted the World Cup in 1960. Eric’s commitment to the game is a source of inspiration to many of today’s players.
Eric’s on field success rubbed off here when he coached St Helens to a challenge cup final and was Chairman of the club when we won the inaugural Super League and Challenge Cup double.
Eric’s success as a player, coach and chairman has been unrivalled and he truly deserves his place in the Rugby League hall of fame.
Eric will be sadly missed and my thoughts are with Eric’s wife Doreen and his family.
